Welcome to the IWBA Official Web Site
Formed in 1947,
the I.W.B.A. is the National Governing Body for the sport of women's bowls in
Ireland. Under its umbrella it has four associations, whose total of affiliated
clubs is 84, covering both Northern Ireland and the Republic where the clubs are
mainly located in the Dublin area. The Association aims, through the promotion of competition bowls, to enable players to develop their full potential at all levels, up to and including International representation.
For those who are not so competitively minded there is also a place for recreational bowls at club level, and most clubs will welcome enquiries from prospective members.
Ruled by a 24 member council, the four associations comprise over 2,500 players. Three of the associations cover Northern Ireland with the fourth in the Republic of Ireland. Each association has it's own league structure and cup competitions, and they meet annually in an Inter-Association torunament, hosted in turn by each Association.
Each year senior and junior (U25) teams are selected to play a tournament of games against England, Scotland and Wales, (the seniors also play against Jersey), thus giving our best players the opportunity of top level competition. Elite squads are also selected to play at Commonwealth Games and World Bowls level as well as in other International Tournaments held under the auspices of World Bowls Ltd.
This year, 2008, the British Isles Championships and Home International Series will be held at Belmont Bowling Club, Belfast from 15th to 19th June.
